With Tropical Storm Debby leaving parts of south Georgia flooded, stay off the water! This will help ensure the safety of yourself and others.
Boating in high water is dangerous. High-water levels can be caused by heavy rainfall, surging tides, flooding rivers or water released from dams. These levels can create many hazards for boaters, including:
- Submerged hazards: Debris such as trees, fence posts and parts of buildings can be hidden underwater.
- Strong currents: Faster currents can make it harder to steer your boat and may knock power poles and electrical equipment into the water, creating areas of energized water.
- Shifting sandbars: High-water levels can cause sandbars to shift, increasing the chance of running aground.
- Covered obstacles: High water can hide obstacles on the shore that were previously visible.
- Large floating objects: High water and fast currents can carry large floating objects, such as trees, that can damage boats.
