This calving season, we want you to take you on a journey with DNR biologists. Each winter, our marine mammal team works to study, protect and conserve endangered North Atlantic right whales in their only known calving grounds grounds – off Georgia, north Florida and the Carolinas. But what that work is really like, scrambling when whales are spotted, spending hours in cramped boats collecting biopsy samples and drone video, coordinating with partners, encountering animals from leatherback sea turtles to seldom-seen shearwaters, and, best of all, glimpsing one of the world’s most rare large whales and doing all we can to better understand and help save them: That’s what this blog is about. It’s happening off our coast. Learn about it here.
