A day out on the water can do a lot of good. For many of us, it’s a chance to get away from the stress of the office, make time for family and invest in our health and well-being. For those of us who risk everything in service of our neighbors and country, it’s a way to relax from the everyday stressors associated with combat, emergency response and the physical rigors of rehabilitation. Heroes on the Water (HOW) is a charity that provides therapeutic programs for veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, and their families.
McDuffie Public Fishing Area (PFA) was honored to host the Fort Gordon Chapter of Heroes on the Water this past September. HOW uses kayak fishing to boost independence and build camaraderie. At the McDuffie PFA event, participants were taught the basics of paddling and kayak fishing, provided angling and adaptive kayaking equipment, and given a meal—all free of charge. Participants were able to spend time with other kayak anglers, connect with colleagues, and spend quality family time. The best part, however, is that participants were introduced to a new pastime that will be there for them whenever they need to restore a sense of peace, self-confidence, self-reliance, and hope.
Professional educators, counselors, licensed fishing guides, wildlife and aquatic biologists, active duty military personnel, and experienced fishermen donated their time and expertise to share their love of the outdoors with wounded military personnel.
If you’d like to be a part of Heroes on the Water, they are actively seeking donations to fund the program and looking to add to their volunteer and coordination staff. You can reach the Fort Gordon chapter at ft.gordonga@heroesonthewater.org.
