By: Cpl. Jesse Cook, Wildlife Resources Division’s Law Enforcement Section

Art students at North Habersham Middle School, South Habersham Middle School and Rabun County High School participated in a boating safety awareness poster contest for National Safe Boating Week. Art teachers provided an opportunity for the students to get the message out to stay safe while boating. The Lake Burton, Lake Rabun and Lake Seed homeowners associations provided generous contributions for the winning artist.

The Boating Safety Poster Contest is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Law Enforcement Section, the Georgia Power Company and the lakes homeowners associations. This contest is meant not only to give young adults the opportunity to learn about safe boating, but to also provide experienced boaters a reminder about safe boat handling and operations.

All students who participated produced excellent posters. The posters were judged on originality, boating safety message and art work.  Judges for the contest were Cpl. Jesse Cook of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Law Enforcement Section, Jeff Jackson of the Georgia Power Company and intern Jacob Smith.
